Background information

¬ The Microbiome - Mankind is not alone.

Trillions of bacteria and other microorganisms are living in and on our bodies. This microbiome is as unique as a fingerprint. Changes to the microbiome can manipulate the body from healthy to ill - or the other way round. This is precisely the focus of current research at the Cluster of Excellence "Inflammation at Interfaces", because targeted changes to the microbiome are one of the most important starting points for personalized treatments.

¬ Chronic inflammations are one of the plagues of the 21st century. They are based on genetic disposition which, when combined with lifestyle factors, increasingly cause diseases. The Schleswig-Holstein Cluster of Excellence "Inflammation at Interfaces" has built up an infrastructure since 2007 that is unique nationwide, to explore the origin of disease as well as new ways of personalizing patient care.

Healing inflammation - One Step Ahead.

Science communication

¬ Language can make complex research generally understandable to all, but sometimes it is pushed to its limits. Artistic translation of research topics creates a completely different kind of science communication. The Cluster of Excellence and Muthesius University of Fine Arts and Design are using art to make biomedical research topics easily comprehensible. 18 projects are being displayed as from May 2017 in an exhibition in Kiel under the title “The Microbiome - Mankind is not alone”.
